Who made up most of the population? How much of the population did they make?
Peasants made up around 80% of the population
When did peasants begin to farm their land?
Most of them lived in the countryside and had been given their own land to farm in 1861. They could not leave their village without permission.

What problem did most peasants have?
They were often poor, and there was often widespread starvation and disease.
What was the name of the secret police network called and what did they do?
There was a secret police network called the Okhrana who’s job was to find anyone who might threaten the Tsar’s power
Who were the smallest class, what were 2 occupations in that class?
The middle classes were the smallest group of people such as merchants, bankers, doctors, lawyers and teachers.
What did the middle class want to do?
They wanted to make improvements within Russia and were starting to become active in politics.
Why was communication difficult?
Communication was difficult as there were few paved roads and difficult seasonal conditions. Also Russia was very large. Travel by road was very slow.
How many people were in the Russian empire?
The Russian Empire consisted of more than 130 million people.
How much of the Russian’s empire was made up of people conquered by the Russians
55.6 million however were Russian and the rest was made up of people who had been conquered by the Russians.
How many miles did Russia stretch from East to west and north to South?
Russia itself from East to West stretched some 4,000 miles. From top to bottom some 2,000 miles.

4 in every 5 people were peasants in Russia
Why were peasants angry and the government? Give 3 reasons
Many faces issued with starvation and disease due to poor conditions. Peasants received no help from the government and were angry that landowners had so much land.
