Skin Flashcards
What function does epithelium tissue do?
Covers the body
What are the four types of body tissues?
Epithelium, connective, muscle, and nerve
What function does connective tissue do?
Connects cell layers
What are muscle tissues associated with?
Are associated with hairs and response
What function does nerve tissue do?
Detects
What are the muscle types?
Skeletal, smooth, and cardiac
What do skeletal muscles do?
Contract for voluntary movements
What do smooth muscles do?
Contracts slowly to move substances along internal passageways
What do cardiac muscles do?
Pumps blood in the circulatory system
What is the epidermis?
The outer, thinner portion of skin composed of both dead and living cells
What is keratin?
A protein in the layer of dead cells that helps waterproof and protect the living cells beneath
What is melanin?
A pigment that protects cells from damage from solar radiation
What is the dermis?
The inner, thicker portion of skin, contains blood vessels, nerves, nerve endings, sweat and oil glands, subcutaneous layer, and hair follicles
What are the major functions of the skin?
Regulates body temperature, serves as a protective layer, and is a major sense organ
When skin is injured into the dermis, what is the body’s first reaction?
To restore the continuity of the skin
How are burns rated?
According to severity
What is a 1st degree burn like?
Characterized by redness and mild pain - involves death of epidermal cells
What is a 2nd degree burn like?
Involves damage to skin cells of the dermis and can result in blistering and scarring
What is a 3rd degree burn like?
Most severe; destroys the epidermis and dermis; skin function is lost, regrowth of the skin is slow with much scarring, skin grafts may be required to replace lost skin
What happens due to aging?
Wrinkles appear due to elasticity loss and less oil is produced resulting in dry skin
What are the three types of skin cancer?
Basal, squamous, and melanoma
What causes skin cancer?
Interruption of DNA replication
