Homeostasis And The Plasma Membrane Flashcards
What is selective permeability?
Allows some materials through while keeping others out
What is equilibrium?
An organism’s internal environment that maintains conditions suitable for life
What is diffusion?
The movement of particles from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration
What is Brownian Motion?
Random movement of molecules
What happens during dynamic equilibrium?
Particles equal out
What is osmosis?
Diffusion of water molecules through a selectively permeable membrane
What is a solution?
A mixture of solute (the substance dissolved) and solvent (liquid)
What happens during passive transport?
No energy issued to move particles (ex. Diffusion)
What happens during active transport?
Requires energy, movement against a concentration gradient
What is endocytosis?
Cell surrounds and takes in material
What happens during pinocytosis?
Cellular drinking
What happens during phagocytosis?
Cellular eating
What happens during exocytosis?
Moves wastes out of cell
