What are cellular chemical processes referred to as?

What can cells do?
They can build chemical compounds (anabolism) and break down larger molecules (catabolism).
What are enzymes?
A type of protein that helps control and manage cell metabolism. They lower the activation energy normally required for chemical reactions to take place
What are the special bonding areas in enzymes?
Active sites
What are substrates?
The molecules an enzyme metabolizes
What is an induced fit?
How an enzyme-substrate complex bonds
What factors can determine how well an enzyme functions?
High temperatures can break it down
pH range from 6-8 is when it works bests
Some only work in the presence of cofactors (zinc, iron) and coenzymes (vitamins)
Other compounds inhibit them by blocking the active site (competitive inhibitor) or bonding to it and changing its shape (noncompetitive inhibitor)
