Skin 1 Flashcards
Where does the epidermis originate from
Ectoderm
Where does the dermis originate from
Mesoderm that comes into contact with the inner surface of the epidermis
What is the mesoderm essential for inducing
Differentiation of epidermal structures ( e.g. hair follicles)
Overview of the formation of the skin
Epidermis forms by week 4 as a basal layer of cuboidal cells
Second layer of squamous , non keratinising cuboidal cells ( periderm ) develops
Basal layer of Cuboidal cells ( stratum germinativum ) proliferates to form multilayered intermediate zone for the four superficial strata
Epidermal ridges protrude as thoughts into developing Dermis beneath neurovascular supply develops into dermal papillae
Weeks 9-13 development of hair follicles in stratum germinativum and appearance of lanugo hair
What does the periderm produce
White waxy protective substance - vernix caeseosa
What are the four superficial strata of the epidermis
Strata spinosum ( spinous) Strata granulosum ( granular) Strata lucidum ( clear and found in the palms of hands and soles of feet) Strata corneum ( horny)
