1
Q

Pathophysiology of OA

A

OA is a long term chronic disease characterised by the deterioration of the cartilage in joints resulting in the bones rubbing together and creating stiffness, pain and impaired movement

Q

Difference between osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis

A

Osteoarthritis : mechanical wear then gets damages and lost and THEN INFLAMMATION

Rheumatoid arthritis ; SYNOVIAL INFLAMMATION FIRST and then leads to wear and tear

Q

Why might you get pain in the leg when there is a problem in the hip joint

A

Brain doesn’t interpret hip pain very well and so may present pain in the knee. Pain and stiffness and pain go down the knees which could explain why the knees are aching as well

17
Q

What do the patients present with in osteoarthritis

A

Patients present with pain and stiffness in joints , worsened with activity and relieved by rest, with associated clinical signs depending on the joint involved

18
Q

Clinical treatment of osteoarthritis

A

Can be managed conservatively initially, but may require surgical intervention if significant impact to quality of life remains. Do need an X ray to confirm osteoarthritis
