Skill Aqusition Flashcards
What are the two definitions of Skill?
“learned ability to bring about a pre-determined result with maximum certainty, often with the minimum outlay of time or energy or both.”
“Organised, co-ordinated activity in relation to an object or situation which involves a whole chain of sensory, central and motor mechanisms.”
Define Ability.
A natural predisposition to be more able than average at an action.
What are the 7 Characteristics of Skill?
- Aesthetically pleasing - looks good.
- Consistent - same every time
- Efficient - fast, not time-wasting
- Fluent - flows, not stop and start
- Accurate - predetermined result
- Controlled - know what you’re doing and how to do it
- Economical - not wasting energy
What are the Skill Classifications and their pairings?
Open - Closed
Gross - Fine
Simple - Complex
Self-Paced - Externally Paced
Discrete - Serial - Continuous
HIgh Organised - Low Organised
Define Open Skills.
A skill performed in an unpredictable environment.
- Performer must make decisions as skill is in progress.
- Environment is constantly changing.
Define Closed Skills.
A skill performed in a predictable environment.
- Stable environment, few decisions.
- Performer can repeat the actions consistently, in a stable environment.
Define Gross Skills.
A skill that uses large muscle groups.
- Major bodily movements.
- Skills associated with strength, power, endurance.
Define Fine Skills.
A skill that uses smaller muscle groups.
- Small bodily movements.
- Skills associated with speed, and accuracy.
Define Simple Skills.
A skill that requires few decisions when being performed.
- Little information to process.
- Time to evaluate the situation.
Define Complex Skills.
A skill that requires decision-making using lots of information.
- Lots of decision-making.
- Many subroutines.
- Not a lot of time to evaluate.
Define Self-Paced SKills.
When the performer controls the start and speed of the skill.
- Performer decides when to initiate movement.
- Involves pro-activeness.
- More closed skills.
- Involves pro-action.
Define Externally-Paced Skills.
When the performer has no control over the start and speed of the skill.
- Action is determined by external sources.
- Involves the performer in reaction.
- More open skills.
Define Discrete Skills.
A skill that has a clear beginning and end.
- Brief in nature, a single specific skill.
- If a skill is repeated it has to start at the beginning.
Define Serial Skills.
A skill that contains several discrete skills in order to make more integrated movement.
- Order of elements is very important.
Each movement is both a stimulus and a response.
Define Continuous Skills.
has no clear beginning and end.
- Actively continues for an unspecified time.
- The end of one movement is the beginning of the next.
e.g. continuous running/cycling
