Skeletal System Axial Division Flashcards
What is the function of facial bones?
Protect and support the entrances to the digestive and respiratory tracts
What are the names of the superficial facial bones? (7)
Maxillae, palatine, nasal, zygomatic, lacrimal, vomer, and mandible
What is the function of the superficial facial bones?
Areas for the attachment of muscles that control facial expressions and assist in manipulation of food
What are sutures?
Boundaries between skull bones that are immovable.
What kind of tissue holds together bones at a suture?
Dense connective tissue
What are the 5 main sutures of the skull?
Lamboid, Sagittal, coronal, squamous, and frontonasal
Describe the lamboid suture
Arches across posterior surface of the skull, separating the occipital bone from the parietal bone. May contain sutural bones
Describe the Sagittal suture
Begins at the superior midline of the lamboid suture and extends anterior between the parietal bones of the coronal suture
Describe the Coronal Suture
Crosses the superior surface of the skull , separating the anterior frontal bone from the posterior parietal bones
What structures makes up the calvaria? (3)
Occipital bone, parietal bone, and frontal bone.
What is another name for calvaria?
Skullcap
Describe squamous suture
Marks the boundary between the temporal bone and parietal bone
Describe the frontonasal suture
Boundary between the superior aspects of the two nasal bones and the frontal bone
Foramen magnum
Large circular opening that connects the cranial cavity with spinal cavity enclosed by the vertebral column
What is the cranial cavity?
Enclosed by the cranial bones, it is a fluid filled chamber that cushions and supports brain
