skeletal system Flashcards
exam 1
components of the skeletal system
bone
cartilage
tendons
ligaments
skeletal system functions
- supports the body
- protects internal organs
- facilitates movement
- stores/ releases minerals
- produces blood cells
microscopic bone anatomy
bone is connective tissue composed of living cells and EC matrix
osteoblasts
type of bone cells that synthesize osteoid, immature active cells, “build”
osteocytes
type of bone cell that is mature, derived from osteoblasts, maintains matrix and health of bone over time.
osteoclast
type of bone cell that breaks down and releases needed minerals from the bones
bone matrix (organic/inorganic component)
made of organic osteoid, allows for bones to resist stretching and twisting, and inorganic salt crystals, which give rigid qualities
axial vs appendicular skeleton
axial- ribcage, spine, skull
appendicular- limbs + pelvic and hip girdle
body
main part of bone
head
enlarged, rounded end
condyle
smooth, rounded articular surface
facet
small, flattened articular surface
spine
very high ridge
crest
prominent ridge
process
prominent projection
