Skeletal System Flashcards
What are the functions of the skeletal system?
Support: Bearing weight of the body
Protection: Protects vital organs
Storage: Minerals and fats are stored in long bones
Blood Cell Formation: Production of RBCs and WBCs in red bone marrow
Movement Joints along with ligaments tendons and muscles allow for movement
How many bones are there in the human body?
206
What are the two divisions of the skeletal system?
Appendicular and Axial
What is the appendicular skeleton?
Arms, pectoral girdle (Shoulder), legs, pelvic girdle (Pelvis) arms legs and how they attach to your body
What is the Axial skeleton?
Skull, thoracic cage (ribs), vertebral column. All the bones in the center of the body
What is the skull and what is it made up of?
Protects the brain. Made of 8 cranial bones, frontal bone, 2 parietal bones, 2 temporal bones, occipital bone, sphenoid bone and ethmoid bone
What is the thoracic cage and what is it made up of?
Protects the heart/lungs and includes sternum/ribs. Made up of 7 true ribs, 3 false ribs and 2 floating ribs.
What is the vertebral column and what is it made up of?
5 sections that support the spinal cord. 7 cervical vertebrae, 12 thoracic vertebrae, 5 lumbar vertebrae, sacrum and coccyx
What are the bones in the arm?
Humerus, radius and ulna
How many bones are in each hand?
- 8 carpals, 5 metacarpals and 14 phalanges
What is the pectoral girdle?
How the arms (Humerus) attach to the body
Also known as shoulder girdle
Includes scapula (shoulder blades) and clavicles (Collar bones)
What are the bones in the leg?
Femur, tibia, fibula
How many bones are in each foot?
- 7 tarsals, 5 metatarsals and 14 phalanges
What is the pelvic girdle?
How the legs (femurs) attach to the body
Aka pelvis
Includes illium, ischium and pubis
What is the strongest bone in your body?
Femur
