Respiratory System Flashcards
What are the functions of the respiratory system?
Supplies fresh oxygen to the blood for distribution to teh body
What does respiration do?
Removes carbon dioxide
How do the lungs work?
Diaphram flattens, the muscles near your ribs contract so the lungs can expand, air goes in your nose and mouth through trachea into the bronchi that splits at the base with one entering each lung.
Bronchioles divide into thousand of tinier passages and bronchioles are at the ends wraped in capilaries full of red blood cells.
Alveolus contains hemoglobin the air you breathe in fills the sacs, causing the lungs to inflate. At this point, the capilaries are packed wih carbon dioxide and the bronchioles are full of oxygen.
Due to diffusion, the molecules of each gas want to move to a place where there is a lover concentration of their kind. As oxygen crosses over to the capilaries, the hemoglobin grabs it up, while the carbon dioxide is unloaded into the lungs.
Oxygen rich hemoglobin is transported throughout the body via the bloodstream. The autonomic nervous system causes the diaphram to ball up and the intercoastal muscle to relax making the chest cavities smaller and forcing the lungs to compress. The carbon dioxide air is expelled and the cycle begins again.
Any damage to or blockage of the structures in the upper airway (Nose, pharynx, larynx can…
Result in unconciousness or death
The lower airway is made up of..
All structure below the larynx
Trachea, bronchi, bronchioles, and structures allow oxygen and carbon dioxide to be exchanged with blood, the alvioli
True
The diaphram controls inspiration and expiration
True
What is inspiration?
Inhalation. Air flows in the lungs, ribs lift up and the diaphram moves down, allowing the lungs to expand
What is expiration?
Exhalation. Air exits the lungs, ribs contract, diaphram moves up and lungs decrease
