A

Due to the level of sugar in the blood. The brain does not function normally if hypoglycemic or hyperglycemic

How do you take BGL?

A

-Put gloves on and whipe the patient’s finger with an alcohol swab
- Hold the patient’s finger and place the lanclet against to release the needle
- Put the test strip against the blood and wait for results: Put band aid on patient’s finger
- Put lanclet + test strip in the sharps container

Hypoglycemic (under 4): Needs sugar
Hyperglycemic (over 7): Needs Insulin

How do you assess pupils?

A

-Obtain consent
-Grab the penlight
-Ask patient to look straight at a target (If unconcious, lift eyelid)
-Point the penlight into the patient’s eye one at a time starting at the side and moving inward
- Assess size, shape and reaction
- Pupils should be reported as a number and how quick they react
- Example L4+ R4+ (+ is fast - is slow)
