Response Flashcards
What are the resposibilities of Paramedic 1?
- Initial impression
- Level of Consciousness
- AEIOU TIPS (Causes)
- Gather information + Communicate
What are the responsibilities of Paramedic 2?
-Gathering/prepairing equipment
-Obtain vital signs
- BGL (Blood Glucose Level)
-PEARL (Pupils)
What does it mean to check the level of conciousness?
Checking a patient’s mental status
What are the levels of conciousness (AVPU)?
Alert
Verbal
Pain
Unresponsive
What are the possible causes of decreased response (AEIOU TIPS)?
Alcohol
Epilepsy
Infection
Overdose
Uremia
Tenderness/Trauma
Insulin
Poison
Stroke
What is the alert level?
Patient’s eyes spontaniously open
What is the verbal level?
Eyes open to verbal stimuli (Are you okay?)
What is the pain level?
Eyes open when pinched
What is the unresponsive level?
Eyes do not open, they are unconcious
Can a patient be more than one level of conciousness?
No, the patient is only one
Why do you take BGL?
Due to the level of sugar in the blood. The brain does not function normally if hypoglycemic or hyperglycemic
How do you take BGL?
-Put gloves on and whipe the patient’s finger with an alcohol swab
- Hold the patient’s finger and place the lanclet against to release the needle
- Put the test strip against the blood and wait for results: Put band aid on patient’s finger
- Put lanclet + test strip in the sharps container
Hypoglycemic (under 4): Needs sugar
Hyperglycemic (over 7): Needs Insulin
When looking at the pupils, they should be…
The same size, shape and react to light at the same time
How should pupils react?
Constrict (shrink) in light and dilate (grow) when light is removed
How do you assess pupils?
-Obtain consent
-Grab the penlight
-Ask patient to look straight at a target (If unconcious, lift eyelid)
-Point the penlight into the patient’s eye one at a time starting at the side and moving inward
- Assess size, shape and reaction
- Pupils should be reported as a number and how quick they react
- Example L4+ R4+ (+ is fast - is slow)
