Respiratory Tract/Airway Flashcards
What happens in the nasal cavity?
Air gets warmed and moistened. Nose hairs trap dust particles and harmful microbes.
What is the pharynx?
Also called the throat. Home to the tonsils and uvula. Splits into two pipes allowing air to push through. These pipes are the esophagus and trachea.
What is the larynx?
Commonly known as the voicebox,it holds your vocal chords.
What is the epiglottis?
A flap of cartilage that closes when you swallow food or water. This prevents food and water from going into the lungs. It opens when a person inhales or exhales.
What is the trachea?
Windpipe made of a long tube with rings of cartilage that lead to the lungs
What is the bronchi

What are bronchioles?
The bronchi’s smaller branches that lead to deeper parts of the lung where the oxygen in the air around you can pass into the bloodstream
What are aveoli?
Air filled sacs covered in capilaries. Site of external respiration.
What is the diaphragm?
Sheet of skeletal muscle that forms a wall between your thoratic cavity and abdominal cavity. Responsible for drawing air in and out of the lungs.
What is the thoratic cavity?
Lungs and heart
What is the abdominal cavity?
Intestines, stomach and reproductive organs
When the diaphragm contracts it pulls down toward your abdominal cavity.. What happens?
The thoratic cavity expands, which draws air into the lungs
When the diaphragm relaxes it pushes up into your thoratic cavity.. What happens?
The pressure causes the air to be forced out of the lungs
