Cardiovascular System Flashcards
What are the functions of the Cardiovascular system?
-Circulate blood throughout the body
-Transport nutrients and oxygen to all the body’s organs
-Transports waste to respiratory system to be removed from body through breathing
What are the four chambers of the heart?
Right atrium, right ventrical, left atrium and left ventricle
How does the heart pump blood?
-Blood goes from one heart pump to the lungs, back to the second pump that sends it to the body, then back to the first pump
What does the right atrium do?
It collects blood flowing in from the body from the vena cavas
What does the tricuspid valve do?
Opens to allow blood to flow to the right ventricle
What does the right ventricle do?
Holds the blood before it is forcefully pumped out through the pulmonary valve and arteries to the lungs for oxygen
What happens after the blood goes to the lungs for oxygen?
The oxygen rich blood returns and collects in the left atrium from the pulmonary veins
What does the mitral valve do?
Opens to allow blood to flow through the left ventricle
When the heart contracts, it forces blood through…
the aortic valve, out into the aorta and into the body
What happens after the blood forced through the aortic valve goes to the body?
The body gets delivered the oxygenated blood throughout
What do the four valves in the heart do?
They guide blood flow in the heart (One way valves atria to ventricles)
When the ventricles contract, the valves close again preventing…
blood from returning to the aorta
The sounds of the heartbeat are produced by…
The opening and closing of the valves
The heart is a two side pump
True
What does the right side of your heart do?
Collects oxygen poor blood from the rest of your body and pumps it to the lungs to pick up oxygen
