Breathing Flashcards
Take 5-10 seconds to assess if patient is breathing. How do you check?
Look, listen feel and consider signs of life
If the patient is breathing, what are you checking?
Rate, rhythm and volume
How do you count a respiration rate?
-Is reported as the number of breaths a patient takes per minute (RPM)
-Look at the patient’s chest rise and fall
-One breath =1 inhalation and 1 exhalation
-Count for 30 seconds and multiply by 2
What is the normal respiration rate?
12-20 RPM
What is SPO2?
-SPO2 is the saturation of oxygen
-Normal SPO2 is between 95-100
-Possible causes of low SPO2 are respiratory disease, shortness of breath or suffering from CO2 poisioning
If the patient is not breathing normally…
Consider why and treat the problem
-Medical

-Overdose

If a patient is having trouble breathing we can give oxygen using…
-Nasal Canula
-Non-Rebreather mask
-Bag valve mask
-Pocket mask
If the patient is not breathing, or showing signs of life…
Perform Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
If the patient is breathing..
Put the patient into recovery position
How do you put the patient in recovery position?
-Support face: Place the arm nearest you at right angles to the body. Place their other hand against their cheek
-Lift lift: Get hold of the far leg just above knee and pull it up, keeping the foot flat on the ground
-Roll over: Keep their hand pressed against their cheek and pull on the upper leg to roll them towards you and onto their side
