What are the functions of the skeletal system?
Support the body when standing, sitting and laying down
Protect organs
Movement
Blood production in bone marrow
Mineral storage in bone marrow
How do bones grow?

What is a long bone?
Used in the main movements in our body (acts as levers).
What is an example of a long bone?
Fibula
What is a short bone?
Used for weight-barring and fine movements.
What is an example of a short bone?
Phalanges
What is a flat bone?

Cranium
What is an irregular bone?
They give the body shape and protection and used for muscle attachment.
What is an example of an irregular bone?

What does the capsule in a joint do?
Surrounds the joint and keeps everything in place.
What does the synovial membrane in a joint do?
Produces synovial fluid.
What does the synovial fluid in a joint do?
Lubricates the joint.
What does the cartilage do in a joint?
Stops the bone from rubbing (prevents friction).
What does the ligaments do in a joint?
Connects bone to bone to stop dislocating.
What is a joint?
Where two bones meet.
What movement does a ball and socket joint allow?
Ball on one end and socket on the other. All types of movement are possible here.
What is an example of ball and socket?
Hip or shoulder
What movement does a hinge joint allow?
Only allows movement in one direction (flexion and extension).
What is an example of a hinge joint?
Knee
What movement does a pivot joint allow?
Only rotation.
What is an example of a pivot joint?
Neck or elbow
