Skeletal classification Flashcards

1
Q

What is it?

A

classification of relative positions of maxilla + mandible
(in a normal relationship the maxilla is just anteriorly placed in relationship to the mandible)
Measurements of the amount of this separation defines the classification

Q

Why is this important?

A
If there is a discrepancy at this stage + the young person is at the correct stage of development i.e 8-14 years (still growing)
A functional appliance will be considered for skeletal class II holding the mandible forwards in an ideal class I position + allowing mandibular growth

Q

Functional appliances

A

specialist removable appliances made of acrylic + stainless steel components worn in both arches at the same time. the commonest being a twin block. They can only be used whilst pt still growing (up to 14) + should be worn all the time but removed for sport.
Should be removed for cleaning +in some cases may need to be removed for eating
