What is Sjogren’s syndrome?
Autoimmune condition - Affects the exocrine glands, leads to dry mucous membranes
Epidemiology of Sjogren’s syndrome?
Women, 40-50 years
Pathophys of Sjogren’s syndrome?
Lymphocytic infiltration and fibrosis of salivary and lacrimal glands
Presentation of Sjogren’s syndrome?
Dry eyes (conjunctivitis and blepharitis)
Dry mouth
Small joint pain
What is someone with Sjogren’s likely to develop?
Lymphoma
Investigation for Sjogren’s syndrome?
Schirmer Test - less 10mm moisture on lower eyelid paper strip
ANA pos
High ESR normal CRP
Mangement of Sjogren’s syndrome?
Artificial tears
Artificial saliva
Vaginal lubricants
Hydroxychloroquine to slow progression of disease
Complications from Sjogren’s syndrome?
Eye problems (conjunctivitis, corneal ulcers)
Oral problems (dental cavities, candida infections)
Vaginal problems (candidiasis and sexual dysfunction)
Lymphoma
Prognosis of Sjogren’s syndrome?
Continual management of flare ups
