What is Lyme disease?
Bacterial infection spread through tick bites
What are the three stages of Lyme disease?
Early localised
Early disseminated
Late disseminated
Investigation of Lyme disease?
No early investigations - culture, antibody detection is low yield
late stage of disease - immunoblot techniques and antibody detection
Management of Lyme disease?
early disease - Oral abx - 2 week course: doxycycline (200mg) or Amoxicillin ( 3x500mg daily)
late disease - abx >28 days
Prognosis of Lyme disease?
2-4 weeks cured with abx
can get Post Treatment Lyme Disease Syndrome (PTLDS). no treatment
Prevention of Lyme Disease?
try not to get bitten by a tick
Rheumatological symptoms of Lyme Disease?
Bacteria enters the joint causing inflammation, swelling and pain
