What is Sjogren’s?
Chronic autoimmune inflammatory disorder affecting secretions
What is primary Sjogren’s?
Not associated with other diseases
What is secondary Sjogren’s?
Associated with another underlying rheumatic disorder
What is the pathophysiology?
Lymphocytic infiltration and fibrosis of exocrine glands - particularly lacrimal and salivary
What are the symptoms?
Dry eyes Dry mouth Fatigue Raynaud's phenomenon Myalgia Arthralgia
What is xerophthalmia?
Dry eyes
What is xerostomia?
Dry mouth
What investigations are done?
Anti-Ro antibodies
Anti-La antibodies
Schirmer’s test
Salivary gland biopsy
What is Schirmer’s test?
Strip of filter paper under lower eyelid. Leave for 5 minutes.
<5mm is abnormal
How is Sjogren’s managed?
Artificial tears
Suck sweets for saliva
Avoid dry atmospheres
What are sicca symptoms?
Dry eyes
Dry mouth
