What is hypermobility?
Joints that move beyond normal limits due to laxity of ligaments, capsules and tendons
What is hypermobility spectrum disorder?
Pain associated with hypermobility
What causes the pain?
Microtrauma
What are the symptoms?
Pain
- around joints
- worse after activity
Soft tissue inflammation
Archnodactyly
Hernias
What is the aim of treatment?
Improve pain
Reduce disability
What conservative management is used?
Strengthening exercises
Improve posture
Splinting joints
What pharmacological treatment is used?
Pain relief - most commonly paracetamol
What is the Beighton score?
Score to asses for hypermobility
- hands flat on floor with knees straight
- bend elbow backwards
- bend knee backwards
- bend thumb onto forearm
- little finger 90 degrees to dorsum of hand
Score 4/9 = hypermobility
What connective tissue disorders are associated with hypermobility?
Marfan’s
Ehlers-Danlos
What is Marfan’s syndrome?
Autosomal dominant condition with defective fibrillin
What are complications of Marfan’s syndrome?
Lens dislocation
Aortic dissection
Aortic regurg
What is Ehlers-Danlos syndrome?
Group of inherited conditions with defective collagen synthesis
What are the symptoms of Ehlers-Danlos?
Hypermobile joints
Hyperelastic skin
