- the Voice of a literary work is the author’s writing personality, which we see through the following:
- the sentence structure the author uses
- the word choices the author makes
- the tone: the author/narrator’s attitude toward the text. the tone often gives us clues to author’s message

- it is the author’s voice that identifies his or her writing style, so that we can often tell the difference in a text written by Mark Twain from one by Ernest Hemingway or Annie Dillard
