  • frequently has a happy ending
  • pokes fun: often at human limitations, human nature, customs, or institutions
    • farce: a subset of comedy that has flat characters put in ridiculous situations
    • satire: a subset of comedy that exposes and/or ridicules follies of society or individuals
  • irony: often a component of comedy and usually a component of tragedy
