- drama was the entertainment medium of the day, taking the place of our modern day novels, radio, television, and movies
- attracted all casts of people, from simple laborers to the nobility
- changes in local law at the time caused changes in the drama of the time

- first playhouse built by actor James Burbage in 1576, which later burned
- Shakespeare and his company, the Lord Chamberlain’s men, built a theater, the Globe, using some of the timber for Burbage’s original theatre
- Globe had galleries for seating, places around the stage where peasants stood to view performances, stage o different levels for acting
- owned by the players themselves
- plays were announced by flying flagss on the theater. black flag meant tragedy, whit flag meant comedy, red flag meant history
- burned in 1613, was rebuilt in 1614 and used until it was banned by the Puritans
- first permanent playhouse, the “Theater” was built in 1576
