  • Unprotected TuG
  • Unprotected SuG at <= 1 BW

Downgrade:

  • Any except Art or FA vs ArmHrs
  • Any except Art or FA; or PBw or XBw <= 1 BW vs FArm foot or FArm El

(QRS)

24

(QRS)

25
Q

(QRS)

26
Q

In shooting, when are S results converted to wounds?

A
  • skilled vs. superior
  • foot XBw standing to receive shooting at those charging them

(QRS)

27
Q

In shooting, what are the upgrades/downgrades based on units being engaged in combat?

A

Downgrade for shooting at front base of a supporting file.

(QRS)

28
Q

What is the arc of fire for shooting?

A
  • 2 BW for artillery shooting > 4 BW
  • 1 BW otherwise

(QRS)

29
Q

What is the target priority for shooting? What targets are prohibited?

A
  • Target priority:
    • if <= 1 BW range, target most directly ahead if such exists, otherwise
    • any target in arc
  • Prohibited targets:
    • Bases contributing to frontal combat, but supporting files may be targeted.
    • The base must be the nearest in the file

(QRS; p. 156)

30
Q

Can you target the 4th rank of a pike column with shooting?

A

Yes. Although the base is engaged, it is not contributing factors to the combat and so can be targeted.

(Common Questions)

31
Q

How do you compute the slowing effects of fire?

A
  • Total all non-blank dice (skull, Sw&Ar, S)
  • Compare total to frontage of UG
    • >= 1/2 frontage = 1 BW slowing
    • >= frontage = 2 BW slowing
    • >= 2 x frontage = 3 BW slowing
  • An additional 1 BW of slowing for each S result from FA and Art

(p. 160, H2 & 3)

32
Q

What weapons cause additional slowing effects?

A

Firearms and artillery cause an additional 1 BW of slowing for every “S” result.

(p. 160, H3)

33
Q

What weapons can fire over friends (excluding hills)?

A

Bolt shooters and catapults can fire over friends > 2 BW from target.

(QRS)

34
Q

What are the two shooting casualty removal protocols?

A
  • Shoot by file. Remove nearest base in targeted file.
  • Roll all dice vs. targeted UG, removing nearest base in UG to shooters.

(QRS; p. 162 I)

35
Q

When do UGs with Shoot & Charge and Charge Only Shooting shoot?

A

Immediately when they declare a charge.

(p. 207, 12.2)

36
Q

When standing to receive, at what range does shooting occur?

A

1 BW. This affects factors and targeting.

(p. 84, 5.2, last sentence.)

37
Q

Who can shoot at chargers?

A
  • Anyone where the path of charge is within 1 BW and ahead of the shooters.
  • This includes shooting at counter-chargers and interceptors.
  • Slowing effects of fire do not alter this.
  • “Revealed” shooters do not get to shoot.

(p. 130, K)

38
Q

Do you have to see a UG to be able to shoot at it?

A

Yes.

(p. 155, C2)

39
Q

When are you not allowed to shoot in the shooting phase?

A
  • You made a run away or skirmish response in the charge phase
  • You otherwise shot in the charge phase
  • You made a charge, counter charge, or intercept
  • You made a pursuit in the charge phase
  • You are fighting in melee frontally or as a support file.
  • Your are part of a hesitant ally (but can shoot back)

(p. 86, SP3.1; p. 155 C3)

40
Q

Are you required to shoot if able?

A

No.

(p. 155, C4)

41
Q

How do you determine if you can shoot at a base?

A
  • The targeted base must be the nearest in the file.
  • Both front corners of the shooter must be able to trace a line to some point on the target that does not pass through friends, enemies, or terrain that blocks visibility.
  • Note that cover is based on what these lines pass through.

(p. 156, D)

42
Q

When the shooting base is not the front base of a file, how do you measure distance?

A

From the front of the file.

(p. 158, D2)

43
Q

When shooting when behind barricades, obstacles, etc… how do you measure the distance?

A

From the front of the barricades, obstacles, etc…

(p. 158, D2)

44
Q

Given a file of four foot bow, how many times can they shoot? Does it matter if they are a TuG or SuG?

A

The file can only fire once, and no, it doesn’t matter.

(p. 158, F1)

45
Q

Can units on hills shoot over other UGs?

A

Units on higher ground can shoot over up to 2 ranks of friends if they are >= 1 BW away from them.

(p. 158, F3)

46
Q

What happens when shooting kills a unit that has not shot yet?

A

The unit still gets to shoot as all shooting is considered simultaneous.

(p. 159, G5)

47
Q

How are slowing effects handled for block charges and moves?

A

The slowing effects are calculated for each UG and the UG moves at the speed of the slowest one.

(p. 161, H5)

48
Q

How is prompting through fire handled for block charges and moves?

A

The prompting applies to the entire UG - an extra colored card is not required.

(p. 161, H5)

49
Q

When are markers for the slowing effect of fire removed?

A
  • When making any move - including outcome moves.
  • During the end of turn recovery phase - SP6.1

(p. 161, H6)

50
Q

How are slowing effects of fire applied to a double move?

A

Only the first move of the double move is affected.

(p. 161, H6)

51
Q

Given loose cavalry in good going with 1 BW of slowing effects, how far can it move using the “Fall Back 3 BW” prompted action?

A

2 BW. Slowing effects reduce the maximum distances, so although the cavalry’s max move is reduced from 5 to only 4, the maximum movement distance for “Fall Back 3 BW” is reduced from 3 to 2 BW.

(p. 161, H6)

52
Q

How is the M5 Full Ahead and Shift move affected by slowing effects?

A

The move can not be made unless all slowing effects are removed prior to moving.

(p. 161, H6)

53
Q

What happens when a charging UG is broken by shooting before moving?

A

The commonly accepted practice is that a charging UG broken before moving in SP 2.6 does not move in SP 2.6, later routing and removed in SP 2.8.

(Forums Jan 2021)

54
Q

If a UG loses a file due to shooting, are the slowing effects of fire based on the frontage before or after casualty removal?

A

The original frontage before shooting.

(See https://mortem-et-gloriam.co.uk/smf/index.php?topic=1500 for Simon’s reply.)

55
Q

What bases can’t be targeted for shooting?

A
  • You must target the nearest base in a file.
  • Unless a supporting file, the base can’t be contributing to combat.

(p. 156, D.3 & 8)
