Shock Flashcards
types of shock
hypovolemic
cardiogenic
disributive
hypoxic
obstructive
shock definition
hypoperfusion and/or cellular anaerobic conditions
sudden drop in blood flow through body
hypovolemic shock
severe blood or fluid loss, heart unable to pump blood
parvo, foreign body
cardiogenic shock
caused by problem in heart - unable to pump properly
DCM
distributive shock
issues with dilation and constriction of vessels
heat stoke, sepsis
hypoxic shock
impaired oxygen delivery to cells
anemia, CO poisoning, respiratory disease
obstructive shock
condition prevents blood getting back to heart
rare, emergency
blood clot, collapsed lung, pericardial effusion
shock mechanism
low oxygen –> anaerobic respiration –> pyruvate build up –> lactic acid build up –> hyperlacticemia
shock signs
lethargy
pale or very red mm (distributive shock red)
poor pulses
high or low HR
depression
collapse
cold extremities
bloated abdomen (obstructive)
common to all:
increased lactate
metabolic acidosis
mm colour change
weak pulses
increased HR (dogs)
decreased HR (cats)
