Ship handling and Interaction Flashcards

1
Q

Describe step by step process for snubbing around

A
  1. R.A
  2. Toolbox talk
  3. Check equipment
  4. Minimum speed to keep steerage
  5. Come to P/S of channel
  6. Rudder hard to stbd and kick ahead
  7. As soon as you get headway stop engines and rudder midships
  8. Go astern, stbd swing will be complemented by transverse thrust
  9. Once wash reachs bridgewing stop engines
  10. Once bow is in centre of channel lower stbd anchor
  11. Anchor acts as a pivot point and current will push the stern round
  12. Continue using steps 6 to 9 to help turn vessel

This method should be used when you have any current

Q

Your actions when in a head on situation in a narrow channel?

A
  • Slow down
  • A/C stbd, to pass vessel
  • A/C stbd, to counteract bank cushioning
  • A/C stbd, to avoid suction

Q

Your actions when in a overtaking situation in a narrow channel?

A
  • Slow down
  • Sound signals as per Rule 9
  • A/C stbd, counteract suction from stern and repulsion from bank cushioning
  • A/C stbd, to avoid suction
  • Dependent on size, Big ships go to port to avoid suction, small ships go to stbd

Q

On a single screw right handed propeller what effect would transverse thrust have?

A
  • When going ahead, stern will cant to stbd and bow to port
  • When going stern the opposite will happen, stern to port, bow to stbd
