Ship handling and Interaction Flashcards
1
Q
Describe step by step process for snubbing around
A
- R.A
- Toolbox talk
- Check equipment
- Minimum speed to keep steerage
- Come to P/S of channel
- Rudder hard to stbd and kick ahead
- As soon as you get headway stop engines and rudder midships
- Go astern, stbd swing will be complemented by transverse thrust
- Once wash reachs bridgewing stop engines
- Once bow is in centre of channel lower stbd anchor
- Anchor acts as a pivot point and current will push the stern round
- Continue using steps 6 to 9 to help turn vessel
This method should be used when you have any current
2
Q
Describe the process for short turn around
A
- R.A
- Toolbox talk
- Check equipment
- Minimum speed to keep steerage
- Come to P/S of channel
- Rudder hard to stbd and kick ahead
- As soon as you get headway stop engines and rudder midships
- Go astern, stbd swing will be complemented by transverse thrust
- Once wash reachs bridgewing stop engines
- Continue using steps 6 to 9 until ship is turned around
3
Q
Berthing STBD Side alongside
A
- Shallow angle of approach because TT is not working to my advantage
4
Q
Berthing PS alongside
A
- Broad angle of approach because TT is working to your advantage
5
Q
Unberthing PSTQ
A
- Hold fwd springs
- Rudder to port kick ahead, to bring stern out
- Consider additional fendering on bow
- Rudder midships, kick astern to bring bow clear
6
Q
Unberthing SSTQ
A
- Additional fendering on stbd bow
- Hold fwd springs
- Come to a broad angle to minimise contact with bow and quay
7
Q
What is Bank effect?
A
- low pressure created between the stern of a vessel and a bank will draw the stern towards the bank.
8
Q
What is bank cushioning?
A
- High pressure between the bow and bank will push the bow away from the bank
9
Q
What is squat?
A
- Low pressure between the keel and seabed reduces the a ships ukc
10
Q
How can you reduce the effect of interaction, bank effect / cushioning and squat?
A
SLOW DOWN
11
Q
Your actions when in a head on situation in a narrow channel?
A
- Slow down
- A/C stbd, to pass vessel
- A/C stbd, to counteract bank cushioning
- A/C stbd, to avoid suction
- A/C port, to avoid stern suction
12
Q
Your actions when in a overtaking situation in a narrow channel?
A
- Slow down
- Sound signals as per Rule 9
- A/C stbd, counteract suction from stern and repulsion from bank cushioning
- A/C stbd, to avoid suction
- Dependent on size, Big ships go to port to avoid suction, small ships go to stbd
13
Q
On a single screw right handed propeller what effect would transverse thrust have?
A
- When going ahead, stern will cant to stbd and bow to port
- When going stern the opposite will happen, stern to port, bow to stbd
14
Q
How would you hold an anchor watch?
A
