Q

The effect of the high energy jet on armour?

A

Kinetic energy involves the SQUARE of the velocity - even though its mass is small.

Overstrains the plate being attacked by exerting intense local pressure.

The pressure forces the metal away radially from the point of impact and deforms it permanently

Q

Explain the shape charge jet effect

A

A gaseous jet, with metal particles from the liner flowing in it, has an extremely high velocity

At its tip the jet velocity is of the same order as the velocity of detonation of the high explosive.

Q

The jet has 4 characteristics.

A

Narrow and concentrated

High velocity high temperature with metalic content.

Damage any person or sensitive store in its path

Q

Liner materials used?

A

Copper is most common

Steel reduced penetration and corrodes in long-term storage

Aluminium reduced penetration, increased thermal effects

Q

Stand off distances is the distance between the front face of the shaped charge liner and the target plate at the moment on Initiation of the HE.

2 zones for stand off

A

2 Cone diameter - little degradation

5 cone diameter- peak performance

Factors affecting performance

A

Rate of spin Susceptible to centrifugal force induced by the spin of a projectile.

Recent research has indicated that improvements in penetration can be achieved by minimal spin in a certain direction.
