Attack On Armour Flashcards
Armours has 3 main aspects
Mobility
Firepower
Crew
Types of Armours Amour
Rolled homogenouse armour RHA
Spaced Homogenous
Ply
Face Hardend
Reactive - Explosive reactive armour ERA
Composite (Chobham)
Slat (Bar)
Tank damage assessment criteria?
M mobility kill, incapable of movement, immobilised irreparable by crew.
F Fire power kill, main armament is put out of action, incapable of operating or associated equipment has been damaged (irreparable by crew)
K completely destroyed
A tank is destroyed if it is knocked out, immobilised, and damaged beyond repair.
APC and MICV kill assessment criteria?
Armoured PERSONNEL carrier.
F -fire-power kill, main armament or associated equipment is damaged and is inoperable and unrepairable by crew. Or 75% of crew is killed including the gunner
P -payload kill, infantry (personnel) have suffered casualties and incapable of fighting effectively.
High energy forms of attack on armour?
Kinetic energy
Chemical energy
Combination of both
Kinetic energy definition
In the form of a solid missile, which dissipated its energy on impact and requires no triggering device to control the energy release.
Chemical energy definition.
Form of a substance, with considerable potential energy, is realitive to its mass, which can liberate that energy when suitably initiated. Fuzed
Shot failure types
Barrelling
Shattering
Lateral bending
Explain barrelling
Direct compression failure in shot material, shot bellies out at mid point.
Improved by putting hardness gradient along the shit.
Explain shattering
Raising the hardness of a steel shot whilst increasing its compressing strength, makes the shot brittle.
Explain Lateral bending
At high angles of attack the shot is subject to severe lateral stresses, both particularly towards its rear end.
Ways of increasing penetration?
Battery lengthening
Rocket assistance
Improve steadiness of shot
Lengthen the projectile
Use of segmented long rod penetrators
5 factors effect HEAT shape charges.
Cone diameter
Shape of liner
Liner material
Stand - off distance
Rate of spin
Practise drawing HESH
Seriously do it pussy.
Secondary effects of HESH
Anti personnel
Damage to sensitive equipment
Other targets for HESH
Emplacements
Pilboxrs and concrete structures.
Explain BAE Behind armour effects?
Contribute, either directly or indirectly, to the lethality of a particular mode of attack.
Effects maybe physical disruptive effects (shape charge jet) or psychological effects against the crew. (Blast, shock, heat, light)
4 BAE types
Luminescence
Spalling
Heat/Fires
Overpressure
Fortifications and armour can be attacked by various methods of delivery list 5?
Guns
Grenades
Mines
Aircraft bombs
Missiles
Residual energy is one factor that ammunition designers take into consideration in the defeat of amour. If a round of ammo is to achieve its kill, list the remaining 3?
Accuracy
Reliability
Lethality
