Primers, Igniters and Tubes Flashcards
Primers, Igniters and Tubes are?
are the means employed for the ignition of Propellant charges
Explain Percussion is functioned
Functioned by a mechanical blow of a striker onto the percussion cap assembled in the base of the Primer.
Electric
Functioned by an electrical firing system.
Two Types: Bridge wire type Conducting cap
5 Design Features overall of primers?
Produce Sufficient Flash to ignite the propellant.
Pass the flash evenly over the propellant.
Be self obturating, externally and internally.
Protect the Gunpowder & propellant from moisture.
Flush fitting Screwed / Press fit.
Overall Make up of a percussion primer.
Case, charge, primer, projectile.
What are the components of a percussion primer?
body, cap, anvil, plug, magazine
Types of Obturating Systems
External
Internal
Explain the Action on Firing a percussion primers?
Striker/Firing Pin strikes the Cap.
Crushes the initiating composition against the anvil.
Flash passes through the Firing Channels in the anvil & plug to the Gunpowder in the Magazine.
Magazine Fires, Primer Body Expands against the Cart Case, thereby ensuring external obturation.
Ball or Cone is forced back into the fire channels – internal obturation.
Two types of Electric Primers
BRIDGE WIRE and conducting cap
What is the disadvantage of the Electric primer -Conducing cap
Disadvantage of a conducting cap,
Possibility of Misfires as a result of a broken bridge wire is eliminated & assembly is simplified.
ELECTRIC PRIMERS (Bridge Wire Type) make up.
Base, Contact piece, Bridge, Magazine
Bridge wire obturation is achieved by?
External - As for other primers.
Internal - Copper bridge plug, setting back into the cone seating in the base.
ELECTRIC PRIMERS (Conducting Cap Type) Make up.
Base, Pole Unit, Cap, Magazine.
Name the two (2) types of primers?
Percussion & Electric.
What are the components of a percussion primer?
Body, Cap, Anvil, Plug and Magazine.
Name the types of obturating systems?
Cap Holder, Ball in Cone Seating, Cone in Cone Seating and Firing Plug and Battery Cap.
What are the components of a Conducting Cap?
Base, Pole Unit, Cap and Magazine.
