What are the key aspects of “abnormal” sexuality?
- sexual desire or activity with a non-human (can be an object, animal, etc)
- Stimulation of something that’s not a sexual organ
- Can be complusive, injurious to self or others
What are the 4 phases of the Sexual Response Cycle?
- Desire
- Excitement
- Orgasm
- Resolution
Define Male Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder
- Persistently deficient (or absent) sexual fantasies and desire for sexual activity
- 6 months duration minimum
What is an important question to ask regarding female arousal disorder?
Make sure to ask the individual if they are able to have sexual/erotic thought, if they can act on these thoughts alone (masturbation), or if the thoughts are about someone other than their current partner
-Often times, a couple will come in, and the Significant other will be the one that brings up the lack of arousal. Does not necessarily mean there is an arousal disorder
Define Erectile Disorder (ED)
At least one of the three symptoms during all sexual activity for 6 months:
- Difficulty obtaining an erection
- Difficulty maintaining an erection until completion of sexual activity
- Marked decrease in erectile rigidity
Define Female Orgasmic Disorder, and what to make sure to look for
Persistent or recurrent delay in, or absence of, orgasm….for 6 months
-Ensure that there has been adequate stimulation
What is the “Vicious Cycle of Sexual Dysfunction” ?
- Performance Pressure
- Fear of Failure
- Anxiety that Interferes with Some Phase of Sexual REsponse
- Sexual Dysfunction Actually Experienced
Define “Sensate Focus”
A behavioral therapy entailing no intercourse allowed for a time period, then systematically re-introducing sexual stimulation
-good therapy for anything that issue that involves anxiety
What is Paraphilia?
Any intense and persistent sexual interest other than sexual interest in genital stimulation or preparatory fondling with phenotypically normal, physically mature, consenting human partners, for at least 6 months
