Sexual & Asexual Reproduction ๐ฉโโค๏ธโ๐โ๐จ Flashcards
What are gametes
Sex cells (egg and sperm)
What does haploid mean
Only 23 chromosomes (not 23 pairs)
Advantages of sexual reproduction
Varitaion in offspring, environment has less effect, natural selection & evolution means sexual reproduction is more adaptable
Disadvantages of sexual reproduction
Slower as mate has to be found, fewer offspring typically produced
What is sexual reproduction
Involves the fusion of male and female gametes
Gametes are haploid and are formed by meiosis
What is asexual reproduction
Genetically identical offspring (clones), no fusion of gametes, genes from only one parent
Advantantages of asexual reproduction
Fast as mate does not have to be found, more organisms can be produced
Disadvantages of asexual reproduction
Environment change is likely to be unfavourable to organisms, no varitaion in offspring
