Meiosis & Mitosis 🍓 Flashcards
What are the stages of cell division in mitosis
Interphase
Prophase
Metaphase
Anaphase
Telophase
Cytokineses
How can mitosis go wrong and what can it cause
If the cells divide uncontrollably they cause a cancerous tumour
What happens in the interphase (mitosis)
The DNA in the cell is copied (making X shapes each containing a chromosome and its copy.)
Sub cellular parts (such as mitochondria) are also copied.
What is the prophase (mitosis)
The membrane around the nucleus breaks down
What is the metaphase (mitosis)
The chromosomes line up in the middle of the cell
What is the anaphase (mitosis)
Each of the chromosome X-shape splits to form two single chromosomes. The single chromosomes move away from each other
What is the telophase (mitosis)
The single chromosomes arrive at opposite ends of the cell. The membranes around each nucleus start to form again
What is Cytokineses (mitosis)
The cytoplasm of the cell is separated as a cell membrane divides the cell into two daughter cells
Why does mitosis need to take place (2 reasons)
Growth & repair
Asexual reproduction
What is a diploid cell
A cell that has 23 pairs of chromosomes
What is meiosis
The type of cell division that only occurs when the body forms gametes
What is the purpose of meiosis
To increase genetic varitaion
What does meiosis produce
4 non-identical haploid daughter cells
What does mitosis produce
2 genteically identical diploid daughter cells
