Sexual and asexual reproduction Flashcards
Clone
Organism genetically identical to its parent
Which plants reproduce asexually?
potato plants, spider plants, daffodils
Which animals reproduce asexually?
sea anemones and star fish
Asexual reproduction
Reproduction where each new organism contains identical genes which are genetically identical to the parent cell resulting in no variation.
Sexual reproduction
Reproduction where offspring produced are not identical and therefore results in variation
Gametes
sex cells used in sexual reproduction
Fertilisation
where the male and female gametes (sperm and egg) fuse
What are the advantages of asexual reproduction?
- If a parent is well adapted to an area the offspring will share an identical set of characteristics
- Only one parent is needed making reproduction faster and producing large numbers of offspring quickly
What is the disadvantage of asexual reproduction?
adverse changes to the biotic or abiotic factors may destroy the species as all organisms will be affected
What is the advantage of sexual reproduction?
Variation in offspring leads to adaptations in a species so so some organisms in a population will contain the adaptations required to cope with environmental pressures. These organisms can reproduce, enabling the population to continue.
What is the disadvantage of sexual reproduction?
reproduction requires 2 parents so reproduction is slower and fewer offspring are produced
