Food Security Flashcards
What is food security?
the ability of the human population to access affordable food of sufficient quality and quantity
What are the factors that threaten food security?
- Increase in human population
- Changing diets
- Climate change
- Evolution of new pests and pathogens
What can make food possibly unaffordable for some?
agricultural costs and high oil prices which increase the costs of storing and distributing food
What are some ways in which food production can be increased?
- Maximising photosynthesis in industrial glasshouses
- Using fertilisers
- Removing competition and pests
- Plant varieties of crops which are pest resistant or produce a higher yield
What is intensive farming?
farming technique which aims to produce the maximum food prodcut yield from the minimimum area of land
What are some intensive farming techniques?
- Using fertilisers and pesticides to aid plant growth
- Maximising animal growth rates
- Minimising labour inputs by using machinery
What is organic farming?
farming technique which uses natural methods of producing crops and rearing animals and avoids the use of artificial chemicals
