Sampling Techniques 1 Flashcards
Sampling
taking observations or measurements from a small area which is representative of a larger area
How do you use a pooter to sample animals?
suck on the mouthpiece to draw insects into the holding chamber, a filter stops organisms from entering your mouth
How do you use sweep nets to sample animals?
sweep a large net through the air to catch flying insects or those in long grass
How do you use kick sampling to sample animals?
kick a river bank or bed to disturb mud and vegetation, and hold a net downstream to capture any organisms released into the flowing water
How do you use tree beating to sample animals?
stretch a large white cloth under a tree or bush then shake or beat the tree to dislodge invertebrates which will fall onto the cloth
How do you use pitfall traps to sample animals?
dig a hole in the ground which crawling invertebrates can fall into and cover the hole with a roof so the trp does not fill with rain water
What is an identification key?
a series of questions with a choice of two or more possible answers, each leading to another question until the organism is identified
Branched key (spider key)
an identification key in which yes and no questions are asked to identify an organism
Numbered key (dichotomous key)
an identification key which asks a question and the answer tells you which question to ask. After multiple questions answered, an organism will be identified
