Cells Flashcards
What type of cell are plant and animal cells?
Eukaryotic
What type of cell is bacteria?
Prokaryotic
What is the difference between prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells?
Prokaryotic cells are simpler and do not have a nucleus, eukaryotic cells are complex and have a nucleus
What is the approximate size of a eukaryotic cell?
10 to 100 micrometers
What do all eukaryotic cells have at least?
Cytoplasm, cell membrane and mitochondria
What does the nucleus of the cell do?
Contains the genetic information of the cell arranged as chromosomes which determines the cell’s appearance and function as well as instructions to make new cells.
What does the mitochondria of the cell do?
It is the site of respiration for the cell, enzymes in mitochondria allow glucose and oxygen to react together
What does the cell membrane of a cell do?
Acts as a selective barrier that controls which substances pass into and out of the cell and houses receptor molecules.
What does the cytoplasm of the cell do?
Acts as a site for vital chemical reactions to occur within the cell. It is jelly-like.
What sub-cellular structures are essential for a plant cell to have?
Cytoplasm, cell membrane, cell wall, chloroplast, vacuole
What does the chloroplast in a plant cell do?
Contains green chlorophyll which transfers energy from the sun to the plant as light which is used in photosynthesis.
What does the vacuole in a plant cell do?
Contains cell sap which keeps the cell rigid, supports the plant in keeping it upright.
