Feeding the World Flashcards
What is sustainable food production?
producing foods in ways that can be continued indefinitely
Name one example of sustainable food production.
fish farming
Why are communities moving away from traditional fishing methods?
Overfishing has led to reduction in population of fish species. These fish cannot regenerate meaning they cannot feed us in the future.
What has been done to combat against overfishing?
introduction of fishing quotas and limits on mesh size of nets
How do fishing quotas help against overfishing?
they limit the number and type of fish that can be caught so that enough fish can be left to survive and reproduce to maintain their population
What are the advantages of fish farming?
Fish are bred in large cages in seas or rivers which protects the fish from predators, makes them easier to catch and allows wild populations to recover
What are the disadvantages of fish farming?
Because the fish are kept so close together, disease can spread quickly
What are some sustainable farming techniques?
- Farmers replenish nutrients in the soil by spreading manure
- Crop rotation, gives the soil a chance to recover and maximises plant growth and prevents the population of specific pests
- Biological control, use of predators to kill crop pests instead of pesticides
- Gene control to produce crops that are more resistant to disease
What is hydroponics?
a method of growing plants without soil, using nutrient-rich water instead
Why is hydroponics used instead of conventional growing methods?
Plants grow quicker and more plants can be grown in the same space
What is an example of biological control?
use of ladybugs to kill aphids
