Epidemiology and origin
Guangdong Province Southern China
High morbidity - Back in 2002
Reservoir
Bats
Intermediate hosts: civet cats(eaten in China)
Transmission
Respiratory droplets(major route)
- Airborne, feco-oral, fomites
Incubation period
2-10 days
Case definition(WHO)
) - Fever or documented fever AND
- One or more sx of LRTI(cough, dyspnea/SOB) AND
- Radiologic evidence of pneumonia/ARDS
- Confirm with lab diagnostics
CDC:
- Early recognition by clinical & epidemiological features
- Absence of confirmed person to person transmission: no
alternate diagnosis
Presentation
● Temperature >100.5F, malaise, headache, myalgia
● Usually no URT sx
- End of prodrome- resp sx begin
● Non productive cough, dyspnea
● Respiratory failure
- Radiologic evidence of pneumonia in 7-10 days
- Lymphopenia
Diagnostic Test
ELISA or IFA; Viral DNA by RT-PCR
Prevention
- Use tissues, masks, hand hygiene
- Droplet precautions
