Q
Epidemiology & risk
factors
A
RF:
- Children from infancy to school age
- Young adults in dorms, stress
- Person with no antibody can be infected
by inhaling 5 virions in droplet nuclei
Fomites, unchloranated swimming pools , fingers , aerosols

Vaccination
A
FDA approved live oral vaccine against Type 4&7
for military (17-50 years old)
9
Q
Other clinical conditions
A
- Hemagglutination in vitro
- Febrile undifferentiated URI: infant,
children - Pharyngoconjunctival fever: Swimming
pool children, adult - Epidemic keratoconjunctivitis
(Shipyard’s eye) : Any age - Gastroenteritis: infants, children, military
10
Q
Pathogenesis
A
- Fiber protein: enables attachment to host
cell receptor → receptor varies with viral
serotype → internalization by receptor
mediated endocytosis - Penton base is toxic:
A. Vira genes: E1A,E1B, E3,E4 “early gene”
evade immune system
B. Inhibition of mRNA synthesis
C. Cytopathic effect: cell rounding,
enlargement, aggregation
D. Tissue damage
Basophilic inclusion bodies seen
