Session 9 - Politeal Fossa Flashcards
Where is the popliteal fossa found? What does it look like?
Diamon shaped area on posterior side of knee
What is the significance of the popliteal fossa?
It is the main path in which structures move from the thigh to the leg.
What compartments make up popliteal fossa?
Posterior compartments of leg and thigh
What makes up the superior and medial border of the polipteal fossa? (purple)
Semimembranosus
What makes up the Superior and lateral border (green)
Biceps femoris
What makes up the Inferior and medial border(brown)
Medial head of the gastrocnemius.
What makes up the inferior and lateral border? (tan colour)
Lateral head of the gastrocnemius and plantaris.
wWhat makes up the floor of the popliteal fossa?
posterior surface of the knee joint capsule, and by the posterior surface of the femur
What is the roof of the popliteal fossa made up of?
popliteal fascia and skin
What is the popliteal fascia continuous with?
Fascia lata of the leg
What are the contents of the popliteal fossa?
AV NODE (medial to lateral) Popliteal artery Popliteal vein Small saphenous vein Tibial nerve Common fibular nerve
What are the most superficial contents of the popliteal fossa?
tibial and common fibular nerves
What are the tibial and common fibular nerves branches of?
Sciatic nerve
What does the small saphenous vein do?
Pierces the popliteal fascia of the popliteal fossa to enter the diamond and empty into the popliteal vein
What is the deepest structure in the popliteal fossa?
Popliteal artery
