Session 10 - Nerve injuries of the leg Flashcards
How can the tibial nerve be damaged?
Posterior dislocation of the knee joint
Laceration
What motor deficits are present after damage to tibial nerve?
Loss of toe flexion
Loss of plantarflexion due to paralysis of posterior leg muscles
Loss of sensation on sole of foot
Why is the fibular nerve the most commonly damaged nerve in the leg?
Winds subcutaneously around the neck of the fibular
May be stretched in fibular fracture or posterior knee dislocaiton
What motor deficits occur in damage to fibular nerve?
Foot drop due to loss of dorsiflexors of the anterior leg
What are the three gaits used to make up for foot drop?
Waddling gait
Swing out gait
High steppage gait
How can the deep fibular nerve become entrapped?
Excessive use of muscles in anterior compartment
Causes pain
What can damage the superficial fibular nerve?
Chronic ankle sprains
What does the calcaneal tendon reflex test?
S1 and S2 nerve roots
Useful in sciatica, as S1 may be compressed in L5/S1 hernia of the intervertebral disc
