Session 7 - Anterior thigh muscles Flashcards
What are the four main muscles found in the anterior compartment of the thigh?
iliopsoas, sartorius, and quadriceps femoris
What do the muscles of the anterior compartment of the thigh mostly do
Mainly flexors at the hip and extensors at the knee
What are the muscles of the anterior compartment of the thigh innervated by?
The femoral nerve
What is the illopsoas made up of?
Two muscles, the psoas major and the illiacus - originate in different areas, but come together to form a tendon
What is A?

Psoas Major
What is B?

Iliacus
What are the actions of the Iliopsoas
A powerful flexor of the lower limb at the hip joint, and can also assist in lateral rotation
What is the innervation of the psoas major?
The anterior rami of L1-3
What is the innervation of the iliacus?
The femoral nerve
What are the quadriceps made up of?
Vastus medialis, vastus intermedius, vastus lateralis and the rectus femoris
What do the quadriceps attach to?
The patella, via the quadriceps femoris tendon
What is the actions of the quadriceps femoris?
Main extensor of the knee and hip flexion
What are the functions of the three vastus muscles?
They extend at the knee joint
What are the vastus muscles innverated by?
Femoral nerve
What is the action of the rectus femoris?
Flexes thee leg at the hip joint, and extends at the knee joint
What is the innervation of the rectus femoris?
Femoral nerve
What is A?

Rectus femoris
What is B?

Vastus lateralis
What is C?

Vastus medialis
How do you test damage to the quadriceps femoris or the nerve supplying it?
Ask the patient to lie in the supine position with the knee slightly flexed. Ask the patient to extend the leg and resist the movement - the quadriceps femoris should contract and be observable
What is B?

The sartorius muscle
What is the action of the sartorius muscle?
At the hip joint, it is a flexor, abductor and lateral rotator. At the knee joint, it is also a flexor
What is the innervation of the sartorius muscle?
Femoral nerve
What is A?

Pectineus
What is the pectineus innervated by?
Femoral nerve
What are the actions of the pectineus typical of, and why is this weird?
Muscles in the medial compartment, but it is actually in the anterior
What are the actions of the pectineus?
Adduction and flexion
What is the innervation of the pectineus?
Femoral nerve
