- Do not administer within 1 – 2 hours of other meds – inhibits absorption.
- Give with a full glass of H2O
- Assess for renal disease, heartburn relief, and electrolyte imbalances
Antacids
- Give 15 – 60 minutes before eating or drinking anything that may cause heartburn.
- Assess renal and hepatic function & side effects
- Expect lower doses if renal or hepatic issues are present.
Histamine 2 Blockers
- IV route used frequently for hospitalized patients
- Monitor Zinc and Magnesium
- Monitor renal & hepatic function
Proton Pump Inhbitors
• Assess for relief of diarrhea
• Assess for dehydration
• Encourage intake of fluids and
electrolytes as tolerated
GENERAL CLASS
Antidiarrheal Drugs
Assess for use of antidysrhythmic or antipsychotic drugs due to interaction risks
Opiate-like medications
• Assess for therapeutic effect – bowel
pattern
o Most people have at least one BM every three days. Less than that is usually considered constipation.
• Perform an abdominal assessment
Laxatives
- Mix powdered form with at least 8 oz H2O.
- Separate timing from other meds by 2 hours.
Fiber Supplements
• Do not use for more than 7 consecutive days without medical supervision.
Osmotic Agents
If ordered as a rectal suppository, administer using appropriate technique (hold 15-20 minutes)
Stimulant Laxatives
Monitor for side effects
Hold if s/s serotonin syndrome,
request EKG if heart arrythmias
Serotonin antagonist
