Seperating Mixture Flashcards
Name 5 ways to seperate mixtures
Filtration Evaporation Decanting Distillation Chromatography (just for ink)
What is a mixture
A mixture is two or more substances mingled together but not chemically combined
What is the method of filtration
- Make a mixture of soil and water
- Put a funnel in a conical flask
- Put filter paper in the funnel
- Slowly pour in the mixture
- Wait 5-10 minutes
What is the result of filltration
The filtrate separates from the residue
What is the conclusion of filltration
Non soluble solids can be separated from a liquid by filtration
What is the method of evaporation
- Make a mixture of salt and water in an evaporating dish
- Place this over a basin of water
- Turn on Bunsen burner
- Wait for water to evaporate
What is the result of the evaporation expire met
When the waster evaporates salt is left
What is the conclusion of the evaporation experiment
Soluble solids van be separated from a liquid by evaporation
What is the method for the distillation expire meant
- Connects Liebig condenser to a round bottomed glass with a mixture of salt and water in it
- Put the thermometer in the round bottomed glass
- Turn on the Bunsen burner
- Wait for the water to evaporate and condense again
What is the conclusion for the distillation experiment
Water and salt van be es separated by distillation
What is the result for the distillation experiment
A liquid is being bOiled into gas and then be condensed into a liquid state again
What is chromatography used for
Chromatography is used to separate the different colour dyes in ink
What is the method of chromatography
1 with a pencil and a ruler draw a line near the end of your chromatography paper
2 with a marker put a dot of ink onto the paper
3 wait 10-15 minutes for the water to drag the colours upwards
What is the result of the chromatography experiment
You can see the dyes in the colour seperate
What is the conclusion of the chromatography experiment
Different colour dyes in ink can be sepretaed by chromatograph
