Q

What are the exceptions of these properties

A
The alkali metals (group 1)
Because:
Their soft
Have low melting points
Low densities

Also Mercury as it is a liquid at room temperature which is unusual for a metal

Q

What is corrosion

A

Corrosion is an undesirable process where by a metal changes to its oxide or some other compound by combing with oxygen from air

Eg gold and silver do not corrode copper be ones coated with a green coloured substance on exposure to air

Q

What is rusting

A

Rusting is the corrosion of IRON
FORMS ON THE Surface of iron (or steel) when exposed to air or wate r
It turns into hydrated iron oxide which is a SOFT CRUMBLY BROWN substance which flakes off leaving the next layer of iron to rust

Q

How to prevent rusting

A

Greasing
Painting
Give metal a shock ie.passing a small electrical current through
Galvanising
Coating with a material that prevent oxygen and water from getting to the metal

Q

What is the activity series

A

This series describes the rate at which metals react with substances like water and acid
Some metals are more reactive
The series shows that the most reactive metals will be at the top of the series and the least reactive will be at the bottom of the series
