Bonding Flashcards
What are the two types of bonding
Ionic and covalent
Explain ionic bonding
Ionic bonds are formed when electrons are transferred between atoms
It then turns into an ion
An atoms becomes positively charged when I looses an electron and becomes negatively chatted when it gains an electron
Metals tend to loose electrons and non metals usually want to gain electrons
What is an ion
A positively or negatively charged atom
Explain covalent bonding
A covalent bond is formed when atoms share an electron
What a re the two types of covalent bonding
Single and double
What a is a single covalent bond
Is formed when two atoms share only one pair of electrons eg.hydrogen H2
What is a double covalent bond
Formed when atoms share two pairs of electron s eg oxygen O2
What a re the properties of ionic bonding
High melting and boiling points
Do not conduct electricity when solid
When dissolved in water or melted they conduct electricity
A lot of energy is needed to break these bonds
What a re the properties of covalent bonding
Low melting and boiling points
Do not conduct electricity
Are usually gases or liquids at room temperature
Bonds with covalent molecules are very strong
What is a bond
An attractive. Force between one atom and another
