Enzymes And Digestive System Flashcards
What is the cycle of the enzymes
Starch >amylase> maltose >maltise> single glucose
What is an enzyme
An enzyme is a chemical made by living cells that can speed up or slow down chemical reactions without itself being changed
Function of mouth
Food is broken by teeth and mixed with saliva
Function of oesophagus
Passes food to the stomach by squeezing behind the food this is Called PERISTATSIS
Function of stomach
Produces enzymes which brake down food chemically it also produces hydrochloric acid which kills bacteria
Function of small intestine
Digestion is completed here
Digestive enzymes, bile and enzymes from the pancreas are added to the food here
Function of liver
Produces bile which brakes down fats
Function of pancreasq
Producers digestive enzymes
Function of large intestine
Takes water back to blood stream leaving solid waste
What is a substrate
What the enzyme acts on
What is the substrate broken down into w
The product
How do you show the act of amylase on starch
1 get two test tubes
2 put starch in one and starch and amylase in the other
3. Heat the two tubes over a hot plate or bunsen burner
4 wait for results w
What is the result of the amylase on starch experiment
The test tube with just starch tests positive for starch and negative for maltose but the one with starch and amylase tests positive for starch and positive for mslyose
Conclusion
Amylase breaks down starch to maltose
