Resperation And Breathing Flashcards
What is the function of the trachea
The trachea carries air to and from the lungs. The trachea is made up of rings of cartilage which keep it open
What is the function of the bronchi
Each bronchus carries air between the trachea and the lung
What is the function of the bronchioles
The bronchi branch off into many tiny tubes called bronchioles. Bronchioles carry air to and from the air sacks called alveoli
Function of alveoli
These are tiny air sacks where the exchange of gas takes place
where does the exchange of gases take place
Alveoli
Explain an alveoli
They are surrounded by blood vessels. Their walls are only one cell thick so gasses can pass through easily
Explain briefly the exchange of gases
Oxygen passes from the alveoli to the capillaries. Carbon dioxide and water vapour passes from the blood capillaries into the alveoli
What muscles move during breathing
Intercostal muscle between the ribs, move the rib age during breathing
What is the diaphragm
A sheet of muscle under the rib cage used during breathing
Explain inhaling
Taking oar into the lungs
The rib age moves up and down
The diaphram moves down
Air is forced into the lungs
Explain exhaling
Air is let out of the lungs
The rib cage moves in and down
The diaphram moves up
Air is forced out of the lungs
What is Resperation
The release idpf energy from food
What is the function of the nose
We breathe through our nose. Hairs and mucus in the boss trap dirt particles and bacteria
What is the equation for respiration
Glucose+oxygen = energy+Carbon dioxide+ water vapour
What does carbon dioxide make limewater do
Go milky
What colour does cobalt chloride turn in water q
Pink
What does water make copper sulphate do
Change from white to blue
How do you show that expired air has more carbon dioxide than inspired air
Gather apparatus
Pour limewater into two pooters
Inhale through the short straw in one pooter
Exhale through the long straw the other pooter
Identify which limewater turns milky first
What increases our rate of respiration and breathing
Exercise
