Sensory Systems and Associated Structures Flashcards
what three pathways carry sensory information to the brain
dorsal column pathway
spinothalamic pathway
spinocerebellar pathway
what are the 7 sensory modalities
special senses
discriminative touch
proprioception
pain
temperature
pressure
non discriminative touch
what sensory modality would help you determine the texture of something you touch
discriminative touch
where does sensory information first split from being entangled with motor information
dorsal and ventral roots to spinal cord
(spinal nerves are mixed)
where are the cell bodies of sensory neurons found
dorsal root ganglion which is found between the mixed spinal nerve and dorsal horn
where is the dorsal column pathway found
big section in behind dorsal horn (look up diagram)
where is spinocerebellar tract found
thin strip round lateral rim of spinal cord
where is spinothalamic tract found
thin strip ventral to ventral horn
what information does the dorsal column pathway carry
discriminative touch and proprioception
what does gracilis refer to
lower body/limb
does cuneatus refer to
upper body/limb
what are the two parts of the dorsal column and which is more medial
fasiculus gracilis - more medial (info from lower body so enters first and gets ‘pushed in’ by info from upper body - cuneatus)
fasiculus cuneatus - more lateral
how many neurons make up the dorsal column
3
learn and draw pathways
where are the second order cell bodies found in the dorsal column pathway
caudal medulla
in the nucleus gracillis and nucleus cuneatus
